Introducing the Millionaire Tutors
Author: jeffreyporter
Tutoring is rarely a career that people associate with million dollar incomes, but in some parts of the world
this is a regular occurrence. In Asian countries where test prep is a huge industry, celebrity tutors can often
command six figure incomes and some can even earn over $1,000,000 in a single year. There are a number of
well-known tutors in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Singapore that have gained celebrity status and the high-incomes
that go with it.
One of the most well-known celebrity tutors is Hong Kong\'s Richard Eng. Eng was one of the
first to market tutors as celebrities using billboard advertisements, model photo shoots, high-end fashion and
other methods. He started 20 years ago as regular teacher and began tutoring students in the evenings. After
marketing his business and creating celebrity tutors to work for his company, his tutoring business has grown from
a part-time job to a multi-million dollar enterprise. He now operates 12 schools in Hong Kong and has just opened
one in Tokyo. He has a total of 50,000 students, employs 300 staff and last year he personally took home more than
US$1 million.
South Korea is home to some other well-known and highly-paid tutors. Rose Lee is a Korean
English teacher who brings home $7 million per year. Lee makes most of her money from online classes that students
can pay to view from home, but she also works in classrooms where students can learn and classes are recorded for
broadcasting on the internet.
Another millionaire tutor coming from South Korea is a math teacher by the name of Woo
Hyeong-cheol. Woo is considered by many to be the best math tutors in South Korea. Like Rose Lee, Woo
makes most of his money from his online tutorials which are accessed by about fifty-thousand paying subscribers.
Woo has turned his ability to teach math in an engaging way into a lucrative career that brings him $4 million per
year.
Not far from these South Korean and Hong Kong millionaire tutors is Phang Yu Hon in Singapore.
Phang started out teaching physics and was making about $220 per month. Over the years his student base has grown
and he now makes over half a million dollars per year – and his annual income keeps growing. Phang teaches physics
to groups of students and is considered one of Singapore\'s best and highest-paid tutors.
Hong Kong has lots of highly-paid tutors, but one that stands out isKarson Oten Fan Karno.
Known as K.Oten and 'tutor king', this celebrity tutor has a side career rapping with local pop
stars. So not only is he a celebrity in the music world, he\'s also a celebrity in the classroom. This has helped
him attract more students who are interested not only in learning, but also in learning from a pop-icon. After
leaving a former company to a new tutoring company, apparently enrollment fell by about 7,000 students following
his departure. K. Oten has used his celebrity status to earn as much as HK $2.6 million dollars in just 40 days of
work.
